Every crisis produces dreams. So it is no surprise that series like &#8220;Vikings&#8221; and &#8220;Game of Thrones&#8221; have gained such popularity, and it&#8217;s no wonder that an epic, mythologized past full of strong, almost matriarchal women and powerful men holds such value. And where the epic past and Nordic genes merge, Epica emerges!<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Epica launches into EXIT Universe 2023!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWSxA586a3o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admittedly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exitfest.org\/en\/lineup\/epica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Epica<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not, as one might think, Scandinavians, but they belong to the cultural circle of &#8220;epic Nordic neo-paganism,&#8221; much like the Russian <\/span><b>Arkona<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the Finnish <\/span><b>Nightwish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Critics, often inclined to sort artists into boxes and shelves, say that the most accurate description of the music played by the Dutch <\/span><b>Epica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be &#8220;symphonic metal,\u201d which, in addition to the classic foundation of black and death metal, would incorporate elements of medieval chanting, gothic influences, Northern European folk tradition, and notably (ultra-popular and powerful) Celtic folk music, with occasional excursions into exotica, like Arabic or Chinese music. All of this is underscored by two things that make <\/span><b>Epica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so recognizable and powerful, namely the strong symphonic lines (they don&#8217;t have an actual symphony orchestra on stage, nor string players like Apocalyptica (they do have them in the studio, often!), but a wise use of synthesizers will make you feel like a host of classical musicians are backing them up) and the powerful vocals of <\/span><b>Simone Simons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Epic, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The red-haired, fair-skinned <\/span><b>Simone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems like she just stepped out of a Northern fairytale, a notion further underscored by her appearing in a green dress, like a fairy. Her elfin voice is sometimes accompanied by the metal growls of <\/span><b>Mark Jansen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the mastermind behind this story, and sometimes, as in the good old days when they were starting, a choir and an entire string section join in. At times, you feel as though you&#8217;re in the middle of a performance of Carmina Burana, and at other times, as though the cold wind of the Atlantic is lashing at your face while you contemplate the transience of everything under the grey sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s an understatement to say this concept has succeeded, although it took ten to twenty years to achieve real worldwide fame. It all started with their first album, <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=losGDsEhjdk&amp;list=PLsVoIP7pW8g9fJCN9MfNaIGhB_APpnMpy\"><b>The Phantom Agony<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2003), while with the second one, <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qqUgl1d6chk&amp;list=PLckp0wbUcDOWu4NJVOzWebUyv8OXkFgXj\"><b>Consign to Oblivion<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2005), they established themselves on the Dutch scene. The third album, <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8h2yjfVrmhQ&amp;list=PLWZ1hI-2vAB5ouVdCznbthym0IzFwNwob\"><b>The Divine Conspiracy<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2007), was another step forward towards global fame, which they stepped into with the fourth album, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nMJMAhmUz8o&amp;list=PLhcYUqQCv-gQRQXHbNWrExfehGKricszI\"><b>Design Your Universe<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2009), and especially with the fifth, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1DJ76TQYzNU&amp;list=PL723F0C907F2D4507\"><b>Requiem for the Indifferent<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012), with which they &#8220;unlocked&#8221; USA and Japan. From there, everything went smoothly \u2013 <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-3Jiqzo6E6A&amp;list=PLqayaMvS3xtIlOxSIMhtjJDT5YN-Yv5Lu\"><b>The Quantum Enigma<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (notice how even the album titles are &#8220;epic&#8221;?) from 2014 cemented their cult status, followed by \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KkINTxuQtv4&amp;list=PLWeEAT408ZRKuZ05LkgeqzAF5-FmGcF-r\"><b>The Holographic Principle<\/b><\/a><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2016 and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fyn28Pa9Vco&amp;list=PLLZUjlvnKF05C2olmgJECHBetaLnuNkIT\"><b>Omega<\/b><\/a><b>,\u201c <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their latest work from the pandemic era (2021), which is just now being promoted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what a promotion it has been! They have joined none other than the legendary <\/span><b>Metallica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with whom they&#8217;ve &#8220;rocked&#8221; the recent May concerts in Paris and Hamburg, and they will do the same on June 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Gothenburg.
